MuseumsLiverpool has an extremely impressive selection of Liverpool museums, and boasts to have more museums than any other city in the UK, outside London. Following a massive £35m project in April 2005, the World Museum Liverpool – formerly known as the Liverpool Museum - opened to the public. The World Museum Liverpool has now doubled in size, and so the galleries have been expanded, the facilities have been improved and exciting new elements such as the World Cultures gallery, the Bug House where visitors will encounter giant model insects, a new Aquarium and the Weston Discovery Centre, Clore Natural History Centre and Treasure House Theatre all offer a thrilling hands-on experience. The Conservation Centre is unique in presenting the work of conservation staff to the public. Formerly housed in the Midland Goods Railway depot on Queen Square in the heart of Liverpool, the centre was opened by HRH the Prince of Wales in 1996. On the banks of the River Mersey, Liverpool, in a former warehouse is the Merseyside Maritime Museum. It is part of the historic Albert Dock - Liverpool. The museum, opened in 1980, tells the story of one of the world's greatest ports and the people who used it. The collections in the museum reflect the international importance of Liverpool as a gateway to the world, including Liverpool's role in the transatlantic slave trade and emigration. One of the finest collections of merchant shipping records in the UK is at home in the Maritime Archive and Library. The HM Customs & Excise National Museum tells the exciting story of smuggling and contraband from the 1700s to the present day. HM Customs & Excise National Museum holds the national collection of the Department of Customs and Excise, one of the most important collections of its type held anywhere in the world. Included is an extensive display of tools of the job, prints, paintings and photographs relating to the work of the Department of Customs and Excise. Other items take a look at the ingenious and often dangerous world of smuggling, prohibited goods and concealment. Giving a unique insight into this remarkable city and the people who live here is the Museum of Liverpool Life. It celebrates everything about the city and the people of Liverpool. Their culture, achievements and contribution to national life are all made available to view in this monumental Livepool museum. |
