The Everton Collection ![]() The Everton Collection - the greatest archive of football memorabilia in the world - will soon be launched to the public. A special exhibition housed in the Picton Room, at Liverpool Central Library, will be held late September and visitors will be able to marvel at the wonderful items on display from the first ever Everton Matchday programme from 1886 to the boots of Duncan Ferguson from the1995 FA Cup Final – an experience not to be missed. In the build up to the launch of this fascinating assortment of historical material, the Everton Collection Charitable Trust has given My Matchday an exclusive update on the work so far and what is next for the Everton Collection. The story of the Everton Collection began in 2007, when the Everton Collection Charitable Trust purchased the David France Collection with the help of Heritage Lottery Funding. At this time Everton Football Club also donated its archive of memorabilia and the Everton Collection was born. The Heritage Lottery Fund also awarded the Trust funding for a three year project with the Liverpool Record Office to catalogue, preserve and digitise the Collection to ensure future generations can enjoy this amazing collection. The process of integrating, cataloguing, preserving and digitising both collections started in June 2008 by the Everton Collection Project Team based in the Liverpool Record Office. The Everton Collection Project Team, who are three full time members of staff employed by the Trust, are highly qualified with vast experience of working with world class archives and sporting collections. In addition to the project team, ten dedicated, fully trained and experienced volunteers are currently cataloguing and labelling all 17,000 items which make up the Everton Collection. The volunteers’ work and commitment is essential to the success of the project and their contributions cannot be praised highly enough. The Everton Collection is currently being stored in the Central Library Strong Room, which is where the city’s rare and most valuable archives are stored, such as the city’s charter from King John in the 14th Century. Cataloguing Every single item in the Everton Collection has to be catalogued and packaged in conservation-quality boxes and acid-free paper to professional archival standards, which is essential to prevent any of the items from deteriorating. Preserving the Everton Collection for future generations is paramount and a major part of the project. In addition the Collection has to be catalogued digitally which will be used to produce an online version of the Collection for the new website. Digitisation The majority of the Everton Collection will be digitised by a professional digitisation bureau over the next two years. One of the key reasons for digitisation is preservation; once something has been digitised there is no reason for anyone to handle that original item again. The other reason is the new website; the Trust’s aim is ultimately to have the whole Collection fully searchable on the new Everton Collection website. The Everton Collection Website The new website is a very important part of the project as it will allow different audiences to access the Collection in a number of ways. Fans will be able to search for their favourite items of memorabilia, historians can research the Club’s long and interesting past, teachers can use the Collection as educational tools and children can learn about past heroes such as Dixie Dean, Tommy Lawton and Graeme Sharp. The aim is to have the majority of the Everton Collection online by 2011. Exhibitions Since June 2008 some selected material from the Everton Collection has been displayed at various exhibitions across the country. The Collection will officially launch in September 2009 with a major exhibition in the Picton Room in Liverpool Central Library, which will run until early 2010. It’s then hoped elements from the show will form a travelling exhibition to tour local libraries and community centres across Merseyside, so as many people as possible can access the treasures of the Everton Collection. Learning An extensive learning programme will also be launched in September 2009. Education packs and online learning resources will be produced by the Trust’s dedicated Learning Officer to help teachers incorporate the Collection into the National Curriculum. Loan boxes and specialist handling sessions are being developed to take the Collection out to schools and community groups. Items in the Everton Collection range from the precious to the peculiar, but all have the same importance. There were originally thought to be 10,000 items in the Everton Collection but the archiving process has revealed there to be well over 17,000. Items to note are Minutes books dating from 1887 to 1964 detailing the Club’s history Matchday programmes from 1886 to present day from home, away and overseas tours Over 1,500 photographs of teams, players and supporters During the cataloguing process many amazing and exciting items have been discovered. Since June 2008 the project team have found an 1885 ticket for a charity match between Everton and Liverpool, which is seven years before Liverpool Football Club was established. Over 200 scrapbooks and hundreds of programmes from a private collector, Don Cooper, have also been uncovered. ![]() The team has unearthed many obscure items in the form of presentation gifts from overseas clubs including a Czech miner’s lamp, models of Geisha Girls and a Saudi Arabian model aeroplane! The Everton Collection currently has items on loan at Goodison; all the trophies, silverware, medals, shirts and other memorabilia are on display in the Dixie Dean, Brian Labone and other suites at the Club. The project team will work closely with the Club to ensure these displays are constantly updated to showcase more of the Everton Collection in years to come. The Trust intends to continually add items to the Collection and a number of initiatives will be planned by the Trustees on an annual basis to assist in raising funds to help with the acquisition of Everton Memorabilia. The Everton Collection, which is the most comprehensive football club archive in the country if not the world, is a celebration of the Club’s rich and outstanding history and will be accessible for all in the public domain to enjoy this September.
